Best online shop website builder: DIY or developer?
A DIY website builder is paid for mostly in your own hours, and a web developer mostly in dollars. DIGITALON is the developer option, a Sunshine Coast team building custom WooCommerce stores, so we set out honestly when paying us is worth it and when it is not.
A template gets you started, not finished.
Website builders are designed so the first hour is easy: choose a template, add a few products, connect a payment provider. The slow part comes after, and it is the same on any platform: details and photos for every product, categories that make sense to shoppers, shipping rates and GST that match how you send orders, returns and privacy policies, then test orders before a customer finds the gap.
Hiring a web developer does not make that work vanish: the product details, prices and decisions still come from you, and who loads the products is agreed in the quote. What changes is who plans the catalogue, designs around your products, sets up payments, shipping and tax, and tests everything before launch, and whose evenings it takes. The real question is whether your hours are worth more building the shop or running the business.
Less cash, more hours.
You keep cash costs down and put in the time: learning the builder, setting up the shop and testing it yourself.
- Plan and app fees while you trade
- Layouts within the template's options
- Every setup job and fix is yours
STORE
More upfront, hours back.
You pay once for the build and spend your time on the brief, the product details and sign-off instead of the setup.
- A price agreed before work starts
- A design made for your products
- Your login, to edit it yourself
Time, skills, design and cost compared.
Four things decide whether doing it yourself pays off. The last two points say when a developer is worth paying for, and when it is not.
Time: your hours or theirs
Doing it yourself means learning the builder, loading every product, setting up payments and shipping, and testing, often in evenings and weekends around the business. With a developer, your time goes into the brief, product details and design feedback, and a basic DIGITALON store usually takes two to three weeks.
Skills: what a DIY shop asks
Doing it yourself makes you the designer, the tester and the person who sets up payments, shipping, tax and search basics. Builders make each job simpler, not optional. A developer takes those on; product knowledge, product photos, prices and customer service stay with you on either route.
Design: template limits or a custom layout
A template gives a DIY shop a tidy start, and the layout stays within the options that template offers; anything beyond them needs code or an app. A developer designs the pages around your products and the way people buy them, so the layout follows the shop rather than the template.
Cost: count your hours, not just fees
A DIY shop's cash cost is the monthly plan for as long as you trade, plus any paid apps or theme. Its full cost adds your setup hours and, if you outgrow it, a rebuild. A developer's cost is mostly upfront: our builds are one-off prices from $4,990, then hosting, domain and payment fees.
When a developer is worth paying
Paying a developer makes sense when the shop is a main sales channel, the catalogue has sizes, colours or other variations, you need particular shipping, payment or accounting rules, you are moving a store that already ranks in Google, or your hours are simply worth more running the business.
When DIY is the better call
A DIY builder is the sensible choice when you are testing an idea with a handful of products, want to start selling straight away, have more time than budget, or enjoy the technical side. Starting small is not wasted: products and customers can move to WooCommerce later, as a quoted job.
What a developer-built shop costs.

Compare every inclusion and the optional features on eCommerce pricing, or see website design packages if you do not need a shop.
Your store, your hosting, your login.
Every DIGITALON store is a custom WordPress and WooCommerce build. WooCommerce is free and open source, takes no commission on your sales and runs on hosting you choose, with the administrator login yours from day one.
The shop and the pages that bring shoppers to it live in one WordPress site, edited the same way. You can run it yourself, or hand the updates to the team that built it.
No platform commission
Your payment provider charges its transaction fee. WooCommerce itself takes no percentage of your sales and has no monthly platform fee.
Hosting you choose
Keep your own host, or use our managed WordPress hosting, sized for the catalogue and the traffic you expect.
Care after launch
Our maintenance packages cover plugin and WooCommerce updates, backups, security checks and support.
One Australian team
The people who scope, design and build the store are the people who answer your questions, from Wurtulla on the Sunshine Coast.
From brief to first order.
A basic store usually takes two to three weeks. Extra features and integrations add time, and we tell you how much before we begin.
Scope and price
We agree the pages, catalogue, features and search work, then confirm the package, any extras and the payment stages in writing.
Design
You see the design and sign it off before the build starts, while changing a layout is still quick.
Build and test
Products, payments, shipping and tax are set up in WooCommerce, then tested with real orders on a phone and a desktop.
Launch and hand over
We go live and hand over your administrator login. Standard and Premium include one-to-one training on your own store.

I was very impressed as they were very responsive and helpful as I was a newbie. Good communication with Sabrina who took the time to explain all the process and gave some tips.
DIY versus developer questions.
Hours, costs over time, the risky parts, outgrowing a builder and what you can still do yourself.
Ask us about your store ↗Is it worth paying a web developer to build an online shop?
It is when the shop has to work properly from launch and your hours are worth more running the business, and it is not while you are still testing whether the products sell. What you pay for is the setup, planned and tested: catalogue, payments, shipping, tax, design and test orders.
Our custom WooCommerce builds are one-off prices from $4,990. Still choosing a platform? Compare the four ways to build an online shop.
How many hours will a DIY online shop take me?
There is no honest single figure, because it depends on your range and how much you need to learn, but you can estimate it: time how long one product takes from photo to published listing, multiply by your range, then add payments, shipping, tax, policies and test orders.
If we build it, a basic store usually takes two to three weeks, and your part is the brief, what we need to know about your products, and feedback.
Which package suits an owner who would otherwise use a DIY builder?
Compare Basic and Standard first. Basic is a six-page shop with card and PayPal payments and flat-rate or free shipping. Standard has ten pages and adds SEO, customer accounts, product filters, coupons, advanced shipping rules and 1:1 website training, which helps if you plan to run the store yourself after launch.
Premium suits stores that also need AI search optimisation (GEO), Apple Pay, Google Pay and Afterpay, live product search and order tracking. Every inclusion is on our eCommerce pricing page.
How do I compare a builder's monthly plan with your one-off price?
Add up the same period on both sides, three years for example, with GST in every figure. For a DIY builder, count the plan, any paid apps and theme, payment and platform transaction fees, and a fair value for your own hours. For us, count the one-off build price plus hosting, your domain, payment fees and any maintenance.
Our build prices are $4,990, $5,990 and $7,990 in Australian dollars, and they include GST, itemised on your invoice.
Which parts of an online shop are riskiest to set up yourself?
Payments, shipping and tax, because a wrong setting repeats on every order until someone notices. In our builds they are set up and tested for you: Stripe and PayPal card payments and flat-rate or free shipping in every package, shipping rules by weight, location or cart value from Standard, and Apple Pay, Google Pay, Afterpay, a shipping calculator and order tracking at Premium.
Australia Post, Sendle or courier connections are a quoted extra, and your payment provider charges its own fees.
What can a developer set up in WooCommerce that is hard to do yourself?
The parts that have to be planned first: product attributes and variations that filters depend on, shipping and tax rules, payment options, and connections to accounting software or a CRM. WooCommerce handles all of them; the skill is setting them up to match how you sell.
Premium includes your CRM integration. Accounting connections, subscriptions, wholesale pricing, large imports and other custom features are scoped and quoted before we start.
What happens if I start on a DIY builder and outgrow it?
You can move to WooCommerce when you are ready. We rebuild the shop, carry products, categories, customers and order history across, keep or redirect the addresses that already rank, and leave the old shop running until the new one is tested.
Every move is assessed and quoted on its own, because it depends on what needs carrying across; it is not part of a standard package.
Can I still make changes myself once a developer has built the shop?
Yes. The finished store is yours, with the administrator login, so you can change products, prices, photos and pages whenever you like. Standard and Premium include one-to-one training on your own store, so doing the day-to-day work yourself stays an option.
Bigger changes, such as new features or integrations, can be quoted when you need them.
Will a shop built by a developer rank better than one I build myself?
Not automatically. What helps a shop get found is the work, whoever does it: keyword and category research, clear page titles and descriptions, structured product information and speed. Standard and Premium include the research and on-page SEO, and Premium adds AI search optimisation (GEO).
Ongoing SEO is a separate service, and nobody can promise a Google position or an AI citation.
What does a developer-built shop cost to run each year?
Hosting, your domain renewal and your payment provider's transaction fees, plus maintenance and any optional extension renewals if you choose them. WooCommerce itself has no monthly platform fee and takes no commission.
You can keep the store updated yourself or use our maintenance packages and managed WordPress hosting. For platform fees and lock-in over several years, see builder fees, lock-in and ownership compared.
Weigh it up with real numbers.
Send us your product list, even a rough one, and tell us how many hours a week you could give the shop. We will price the build, show what it includes and set it against doing it yourself. DIGITALON’s in-house team builds for businesses across Australia from Wurtulla on the Sunshine Coast.
