Best online shop builder? Compare the four routes.
Every online shop comes down to two choices: a hosted builder such as Shopify, Wix or Squarespace versus WooCommerce, and doing it yourself versus hiring a team. DIGITALON is a Sunshine Coast team that builds custom WooCommerce stores only, and this page weighs every route honestly, ours included.
The software is only half the decision.
Most comparisons of the best online shop builder line up the software side by side: Shopify, Wix, Squarespace and WooCommerce. The software matters, but so does who sets it up. The same platform can give you a tidy store or a frustrating one, depending on whether someone planned the categories, payments, shipping and GST before the first product went in, and tested an order on a phone before launch.
Put the two choices together and there are four routes: a hosted builder you set up yourself, a hosted builder with paid help, WooCommerce you install yourself, or WooCommerce built by a team. Each is the right answer for some businesses. Below is what each route gives you, what it asks of you in money, time and upkeep, and where DIGITALON fits, including when we are not the right choice.
Hosted builder or WooCommerce.
Shopify, Wix and Squarespace are hosted builders on monthly plans. WooCommerce is a free WordPress plugin on hosting you choose.
- Hosted: sign up and start from a template
- Hosted: the plan runs while the store trades
- WooCommerce: free core, your hosting and login
STORE
Yourself or a team.
Doing it yourself saves the build price and spends your hours. A team charges for the build, then plans, designs and tests the store with you.
- Yourself: lowest outlay, most of your time
- A team: planned, tested and handed over
- Either way: someone keeps it updated
Four ways to build an online shop.
There is no single best way to start an online store. Here is what each route gives you, what it asks in return, and where DIGITALON fits among them.
A hosted builder, set up yourself
Pick a Shopify, Wix or Squarespace template, add products and start selling, with hosting in the monthly plan. It is usually the quickest way to open. The plan then runs as long as the store trades, and Shopify adds a transaction fee unless you use its own payment system.
A hosted builder, with paid help
A freelancer or agency sets up and styles the hosted store for you, which saves your time and brings experience to the setup. The store still lives on the provider's platform, so the monthly plan and any paid apps continue, and moving away later means rebuilding it somewhere else.
WooCommerce, installed yourself
WooCommerce is a free WordPress plugin that takes no commission, runs on hosting you choose and can be extended for subscriptions, bookings or wholesale. It also asks the most of you: choosing hosting, a theme and extensions, then keeping WordPress, WooCommerce and plugins updated, backed up and secure.
WooCommerce, built by a team
A team plans the catalogue, payments, shipping and tax, designs the store around your products and tests real orders before launch. It means a build price upfront and time from you for content and decisions. In return, the finished store, its data and its login are yours, on hosting you choose.
Where DIGITALON fits, and doesn't
We build the fourth route only: custom WooCommerce stores, from $4,990 as a one-off price. We do not set up Shopify, Wix or Squarespace stores. If a DIY hosted builder suits you better for now, we will say so, and if you outgrow it, moving to WooCommerce is assessed and quoted.
What the team-built route costs.
If WooCommerce built by a team is your route, these are our three one-off build prices. The platform and the team stay the same; the pages and built-in features change.

Compare every inclusion and the optional features on eCommerce pricing, or see website design packages if you do not need a shop.
Your store, your hosting, your login.
Every DIGITALON store is a custom WordPress and WooCommerce build. WooCommerce is free and open source, takes no commission on your sales and runs on hosting you choose, with the administrator login yours from day one.
The shop and the pages that bring shoppers to it live in one WordPress site, edited the same way. You can run it yourself, or hand the updates to the team that built it.
No platform commission
Your payment provider charges its transaction fee. WooCommerce itself takes no percentage of your sales and has no monthly platform fee.
Hosting you choose
Keep your own host, or use our managed WordPress hosting, sized for the catalogue and the traffic you expect.
Care after launch
Our maintenance packages cover plugin and WooCommerce updates, backups, security checks and support.
One Australian team
The people who scope, design and build the store are the people who answer your questions, from Wurtulla on the Sunshine Coast.
From brief to first order.
A basic store usually takes two to three weeks. Extra features and integrations add time, and we tell you how much before we begin.
Scope and price
We agree the pages, catalogue, features and search work, then confirm the package, any extras and the payment stages in writing.
Design
You see the design and sign it off before the build starts, while changing a layout is still quick.
Build and test
Products, payments, shipping and tax are set up in WooCommerce, then tested with real orders on a phone and a desktop.
Launch and hand over
We go live and hand over your administrator login. Standard and Premium include one-to-one training on your own store.

Online shop builder questions.
Platforms, doing it yourself, fees, timing, moving an existing shop and what happens after launch.
Ask us about your store ↗Which online shop builder is best for a small Australian business?
There is no single best one: the right choice depends on how you will sell and who will build and run the store. Hosted builders such as Shopify, Wix and Squarespace suit owners who want the platform to run the hosting for a monthly plan. WooCommerce suits a business that wants the store shaped around its products, with no platform commission, owned outright on hosting it chooses.
DIGITALON builds custom stores on WordPress and WooCommerce only; we do not build on Shopify, Wix or Squarespace.
Is building an online shop yourself cheaper than hiring a team?
In upfront cash, usually yes: a DIY shop needs the platform plan or hosting, a theme, any paid extensions and your own time. A WooCommerce store built by DIGITALON is a one-off build price: $4,990 for Basic (6 pages), $5,990 for Standard (10 pages) or $7,990 for Premium (20 pages), with hosting, your domain and payment fees separate.
What doing it yourself costs instead is hours of setup, learning and testing. Our guide to a DIY builder or a web developer weighs that time and the cost over several years.
Are your build prices GST-inclusive, and is there a monthly platform fee?
Yes to GST, no to a platform fee. Our build prices are one-off amounts in Australian dollars that include GST, itemised on your invoice, and WooCommerce itself has no monthly subscription. You still budget for hosting, your domain, your payment provider's transaction fees, any optional extension renewals and maintenance if you want it.
If we choose WooCommerce, which of your packages should we start with?
The one that covers what the store needs on launch day. Basic suits a straightforward shop with card and PayPal payments and flat-rate or free shipping. Standard adds SEO, customer accounts, product filters, coupons and advanced shipping rules. Premium adds AI search optimisation (GEO), Apple Pay, Google Pay and Afterpay, live product search, order tracking and CRM integration.
Features can be added later, quoted when you need them, so a shop you are still testing does not need the largest package. Every inclusion is compared on our eCommerce pricing page.
Can WooCommerce do everything a hosted builder can?
For the everyday work of an online shop, yes. Products with variations and stock, coupons, customer accounts, shipping zones and tax are built into WooCommerce, card and wallet payments connect through providers such as Stripe and PayPal, and extensions add subscriptions, bookings, wholesale pricing or accounting connections.
Anything outside your package is scoped and quoted before we build it. The trade-off is upkeep: WooCommerce runs on your hosting, so its updates are yours or your maintenance provider's.
Will WooCommerce take a transaction fee from every sale?
No. WooCommerce takes no commission, so your payment provider's fee is the only deduction, whereas Shopify adds its own transaction fee unless you use its payment system. Every package we build includes Stripe and PayPal, so Visa, Mastercard and American Express work from launch, and Premium adds Apple Pay, Google Pay and Afterpay.
How long does a team-built shop take compared with doing it yourself?
A basic store we build usually takes two to three weeks. A DIY shop can open sooner or later than that, depending on your spare hours and how much you need to learn. On either route, product photos and descriptions, shipping decisions and feedback set much of the pace, and integrations or large product imports add time that we confirm with the quote.
We already sell on Shopify, Wix or Squarespace. Can you move the shop to WooCommerce?
Yes, once we have assessed the shop and quoted the move. Products, categories, customers and order history can be carried across, addresses that already rank are kept or redirected, and the old shop stays live until the new one has been tested. Migration is priced to what needs moving and is never assumed to be part of a package.
Still deciding whether to move at all? Platform fees, lock-in and ownership over the years are compared on a separate page.
Does the platform you choose decide how well the shop ranks?
Not on its own. Search engines read page titles, category structure, product information and speed, and a shop on any of these platforms can get those right or wrong. Our Standard and Premium packages include keyword and category research with on-page SEO, and Premium adds AI search optimisation (GEO).
Ongoing SEO after launch is a separate service, and no one can promise a Google position or an AI citation.
Who handles updates and security on a hosted builder versus WooCommerce?
On a hosted builder, the platform maintains its own software as part of the plan. On WooCommerce, you or your maintenance provider keep WordPress, WooCommerce and plugins updated, which is the trade for owning the store outright.
You receive the administrator login, and Standard and Premium include one-to-one training on your own store. If you would rather hand it over, our maintenance packages and managed WordPress hosting cover updates, backups, security and support.
Not sure which route fits you?
Tell us what you sell, roughly how many products and who will run the store day to day. DIGITALON’s in-house team at Wurtulla on the Sunshine Coast builds WooCommerce stores for businesses across Australia, and we will tell you which package covers yours, or say so plainly if a simpler route suits you better for now.
